Welcome to Zonta Club Sault Ste. Marie Area
President: Heather Edwards
Zonta Club of Sault Ste Marie Area is one of over 1,300 clubs of Zonta International, a worldwide service organization. Founded in 1919 in Buffalo, New York, Zonta takes its name from the Lakota Sioux Indian word meaning “honest and trustworthy.” Zontians volunteer their time, talents and energy to local and international service projects that are designed to advance the status of women.
Zonta gives you the chance to be a part of something much larger than yourself…
Zonta allows you to give of yourself to others, to actively participate in the selection of service projects to help your community, and to improve the legal, political, economic, educational, health and professional status of women worldwide.

Established in 1978, the Zonta Club of Sault Ste Marie Area holds its general meetings the first Wednesday of each month. Members relax over dinner, conduct the business of the club and socialize. Regular attendance is encouraged.
The Club has various committees and each member is asked to join a committee of their choice. This committee work defines the service aspect of Zonta membership.
Locally, Zonta is involved in a variety of fundraising activities throughout the year. The funds raised flow directly into Zonta’s various service projects. All operating expenses are met with membership dues.

In Loving Memory
Our Zonta Sister:
The Zonta Club of Sault Ste. Marie Area was deeply saddened at the loss of long-time member, Elizabeth Mackinnon, on March 24, 2017. Elizabeth joined our club in March of 1982 where she served in various capacities including President and most recently was the lead for the Breast Cancer Comfort Pillows that were sewed and donated to the local Breast Cancer Support Group.
Elizabeth’s career was with the Children’s Aid Society and later as the Executive Director of Big Sisters in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Elizabeth believed in service to her community. Elizabeth volunteered with Meals on Wheels, served on the United Way Program Review Committee and served four terms on the Board at Women in Crisis. Elizabeth led a support group for the MS Society, was a driver for the Canadian Cancer Society, driving patients to Sudbury for their treatments. She sat on the Board of Credit Counselling for 15 years, volunteered with Blood Donor Clinics and was a blood donor herself. Elizabeth was also a Friend of the Library, volunteering much time in the book store.
Our club and our community have lost a truly valuable citizen, a dedicated volunteer and someone whose presence will be missed by all those whose lives she positively impacted through her strong community spirit. We will miss her mischievous sense of humour and strong sense of social justice. Without a doubt, Elizabeth Mackinnon has left a legacy of dedicated service for all of us to follow whether a Zonta member or fellow volunteers in other areas.
